HFC-23™ (HFC 23) fire suppression systems
HFC-23™ (HFC 23) is a replacement for Halon 1301 as a total flooding agent. Known as trifluoromethane or HFC-23, HFC-23™ (HFC 23) is the preferred alternative where its low toxicity provides for improved safety margins, the protected spaces are large, or where the temperatures are likely to go below 0°C (32°F).

Protecting What Matters Most with HFC-23™ (HFC 23)

HFC-23™ (HFC 23) is the preferred alternative to Halon 1301 in total flooding and inerting applications where its low toxicity provides for improved safety margins, the protected spaces are large, the cylinder storage area is remote from the protected space, or where the temperatures are likely to go below 0°C (32°F). Of the clean agents available, HFC-23™ (HFC 23) has the lowest toxicity and is the safest for protecting areas where people are present. HFC-23™ (HFC 23) provides the ultimate in human safety while protecting high-value assets and business continuity with a clean agent.

HFC-23™ (HFC 23) is:

safe for people
a clean agent that does not leave a residue
electrically nonconductive and noncorrosive
an environmentally preferred alternative to Halon with zero ozone depletion potential (ODP)

HFC-23™ (HFC 23) is a clean agent replacement for Halon 1301 that can be used in areas that are normally occupied. Due to its low toxicity, HFC-23™ (HFC 23) can be used in applications where the occupancy of the protected space is of critical concern at the time the space is being protected. This makes HFC-23™ (HFC 23) useful in total flood applications such as a control room where people occupy the protected space during discharge of the system.

HFC-23™ (HFC 23) can be used in applications with difficult Class-B fire hazards, such as hard-to-extinguish fuels like methanol, as well as spaces where the volume will vary with contents, like cargo holds. The physical properties of HFC-23™ (HFC 23) allow for its use in applications where large differences between the low and high hazard temperatures are expected. The low boiling point of HFC-23™ (HFC 23) allows for the storage of the containers to be located in remote areas, far from the protected space, as well as in environments other than room temperature.

Some other examples of applications where HFC-23™ (HFC 23) is used include: electrical control rooms, oil rig platforms, control rooms, pump rooms, flammable liquid processing areas, railroad locomotives, turbine enclosures, computer rooms, mobile communication facilities, and surface mining equipment.
HFC-23™ (HFC 23) for Total Flooding Agent Applications

In response to the production phaseout of Halon fire extinguishants, Gielle Srl has developed HFC-23™ (HFC 23) (trifluoromethane) as a replacement for Halon 1301 in applications requiring a clean, environmentally acceptable, and humanly compatible fire extinguishing agent.

It can be used in the same applications as Halon 1301 but not as a “drop-in” replacement because of differences in pressure and volumetric efficiency. Because HFC-23™ (HFC 23) contains no chlorine or bromine, its ozone depletion potential is zero.

HFC-23™ (HFC 23) extinguishes fires by both physical and chemical means. Primarily, it raises the total heat capacity of the environment to the point that the atmosphere will not support combustion. In practice, however, extinguishment occurs at concentrations less than the theoretical heat capacity value. This is explained by assuming that the agent also removes the free radicals that serve to maintain the combustion process.

The extinguishing concentration of HFC-23™ (HFC 23) for heptane (cup burner method) is 12% by volume. Although it is customary to recommend a design concentration of cup burner plus 20%, Gielle Srl recommends a minimum value of 16%. Under these conditions, when compared to Halon 1301 at a 5% design concentration, it requires 1.7 times as many pounds of HFC-23™ (HFC 23) to give the same protection. HFC-23™ (HFC 23) is also effective on Class A fires.
HFC-23™ (HFC 23)  fire suppression systems: more infos
HFC-23 was originally developed by DuPont as a chemical refrigerant. Its molecules at the flame front absorb heat from a fire in much the same manner as a sponge absorbs liquid, until the atmosphere no longer supports combustion.

Further, HFC-23 exhibits some ability to inhibit the chain of combustion in the manner of Halon 1301. For this reason the agent is a suitable halon alternative.

HFC-23 Features and Benefits

At Gielle Srl we design, install, and service HFC-23 fire suppression systems. HFC-23 offers you numerous features and advantages as a halon alternative agent:

Low boiling point and high vapor pressure make HFC-23 effective down to -40°.
NOAEL level of 30% makes the agent ideal for inerting occupied spaces.
Contains no Chlorine or bromine and rated "acceptable" by the US Environmental Protection Agency for use without restrictions.

Ozone depletion potential of zero
Limited atmospheric lifetime
Cost effective

Assembling the HFC-23 fire suppression system cylinders, nozzles and distribution pipe into a workable system optimized for your facility is the work of trained fire protection engineers. At Gielle Srl our engineering group will design your system, prepare full color Autocad generated shop drawings, flow and battery calculations, and provide you the hard data you need to rest assured in the confidence of a well designed fire protection system.
